The Ultimate Pre-Shoot Checklist for Photographers

What to do, what to pack, and how to stay one step ahead.

Preparation is everything, no matter what kind of photographer you are. The best images may feel spontaneous. But behind them is usually a photographer who packed a backup battery, mapped the location, and double-checked the brief.

This checklist is your behind-the-scenes insurance plan. Because nothing kills creativity like realizing your SD card is still in yesterday’s laptop.

Let’s get into it.

The Day Before: Prep & Peace of Mind

1. Charge everything (yes, everything):

  • Camera batteries
  • Spare batteries
  • Flash
  • External lights
  • Power banks
  • Wireless triggers
  • Phone

2. Format and prep memory cards:

  • Back up old photos
  • Format cards in-camera
  • Label and organize (especially if you’re shooting multiple sessions)

3. Clean your gear:

  • Lenses
  • Sensor (if you’re comfortable doing this)
  • Viewfinder
  • Camera body

4. Confirm the details:

  • Time, location, and duration
  • Contacts: clients, models, assistants, fixers, etc.
  • Shot list or moodboard
  • Permits if required
  • Weather forecast (don’t just guess)

5. Visualize your shoot:
Take five minutes. Picture the location. Imagine the lighting. Think through your flow. This mental dress rehearsal helps you feel grounded and ready.
